Aston Villa handed injury boost for Arsenal clash

Aston Villa defender Calum Chambers hopes to be available to for the Premier League clash against Arsenal this weekend.

The ex-Arsenal centre-back could face his former employers on Saturday as Steven Gerrard’s side look to make it back-to-back home wins for the first time under his management. In fact, Villa haven’t won two home games consecutively since September 2020, when they beat Sheffield United and Liverpool in the first two games of the 2020/21 campaign under Dean Smith.

Villa currently sit in the top half of the Premier League despite seeing their three-match unbeaten run ended at West Ham last weekend. David Moyes’ Champions League-chasing Hammers beat Villa 2-1 to keep their European aspirations alive.

Though, as Villa look to get back to winning ways this Saturday, Gerrard will be buoyed that Chambers should make a full recovery from a facial injury in time to be selected. The 24-year-old needed stitches after the loss at the London Stadium.

He was involved in a tussle with West Ham’s Craig Dawson, described by Villa head coach Steven Gerrard as a ‘forearm smash’, which required repairs. Despite the positive news that Chambers is expected to be available for selection this weekend, Villa are like to be without Lucas Digne.

Chambers has impressed at the heart of Villa’s defence since arriving in January. He has kept his place in recent weeks after deputising for Ezri Konsa after the centre-back missed the 4-0 win over Southampton earlier this month.
