Tottenham ‘ask’ for transfer that would wreck Aston Villa plan

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly shown an interest in Aston Villa target Rodrigo Bentancur as they look to add to their squad before the end of the transfer window.

Villa have been heavily linked with the midfielder in the past few days with Steven Gerrard keen to add to his defensive midfield options.

Latest reports claim that Villa have seen a bid of around £20 million rejected by Juventus for the player, but the Italian giants are looking for a bigger fee up front if they are to cash in over the next few days.

It is said that the two clubs are ‘not too far apart’ in negotiations , giving hope that a deal can be completed before Monday’s deadline.

However, there could be a spanner put in the works should another club show their interest and try to tempt Juventus themselves.

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte is becoming increasingly desperate to add to his squad before the deadline, having seemingly missed out on both Adama Traore and Luis Diaz who look to be heading for Barcelona and Liverpool respectively.

Spurs are now turning their attention to Juventus forward Dejan Kulusevski with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reporting that the clubs are in ‘direct contact’ over a deal.

It is also claimed that as part of the talks over the Swedish international, Tottenham ‘asked’ about the possibility of signing Bentancur.

It is reported that the club enquired about the possibility of taking the player on loan until the end of the season, something that was rejected by Juventus amid the negotiations with Villa.

If Spurs pursue their reported interest and are willing to make a permanent offer for the player is still to be seen.

Villa, however, remain in the driving seat for the midfielder as they look to make him Gerrard’s fifth new arrival of the January transfer window.
